The quality of solar panels has recieved the boost

10 марта 2021

Recently, NASA astronauts Keith Rubins and Victor Glover had a spacewalk on the International Space Station in order to prepare it for the installation of new solar panels. They managed to place frames that can support the high efficiency of solar panels.

The international station has been using solar panels as a source of energy for a long time. At the moment, 6 panels have been installed, most of them are no longer usable. Modern models are based on the latest technology. Devices became smaller with more power and efficiency. The old batteries are not going to be removed yet, the new ones will be placed at an angle above them.

Solar powered technology was invented at the beginning of the 19th century. The development is still being improved, because it helps to achieve high results, increase product value and add esthetics to living places. Standards influenced on it too. They help support technological solutions and present solar power as a great option for buildings ranging from homes to the space station.

ANSI is actively working on standards to support the successful development and use of aerospace technologies, including solar panels in space power plants. AIAA (American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics) is also involved in the creation of documents. For instance, they developed the AIAA S-112A-2013 “Qualification and Quality Requirements for Electrical Components on Space Solar Panels”, which sets quality requirements for electrical components used on spacecraft.

The standards regulate the use of solar energy. For example, ISO 21348: 2007 "Space Environment (Natural and Artificial) - Process for Determining Solar Irradiances". A regulatory document is needed in order to establish the level of radiation exposure. There is also a list of requirements covering the various technologies that allow batteries to rotate and follow the sun. These include UL 3703 Solar Trackers.

Many companies, which work with standards place great emphasis on outer space. Regulatory documents help to improve technologies, make them more accessible and icrease their quality, as well as contribute to progress in space exploration.
